Install Swift Boxes

Concerned over the impact of roofing works on a nearby building, a resident raised the issue of nesting swifts. This triggered a sustained cross-community initiative to reverse the decline of this remarkable bird. Launched by the Primary School with its Eco Rangers, the town took its swifts to its heart.

The work has been highlighted nationally and internationally, by Swift Conservation, the renowned consultancy on swift conservation, especially in relation to education. Practical outcome included:

• Messages from the schools’ Eco-Rangers to every parent or carer, seeking their support

• 150 new nest boxes crated and installed by volunteers

• Community-inclusive swift mobile

• Swift song

• Swift flags displays

• Primary School Conservation Award.

Local Councillors shave successfully requested greater provisions of swift nest boxes in a new housing development. All big things begin with small actions.
